Re: DSS Settings for StarTools
If you pre-convert your RAW files into TIFF using dcraw, you can avoid problems with white balance etc. This is what I do when using my DSLR.

Large Magellanic Cloud - 55 mm at f/5.6
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC, PGC 17223), a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, visible from southern skies in the constellations of Dorado and Mensa. At a distance of 163,000 light years, it is one of the closet galaxies, with a size of 10 billion solar masses and a diameter of about 14,000 light...

Re: Orion Starshoot G3 Color
I use the Orion Starshoot G3 mono camera - same sensor, just with no color filter in front! It does very well with drizzle stacking (try x3 drizzle in DeepSkyStacker). I've found this works really well, provided you taken enough subs (my rule of thumb is >16, ideally more). Just make sure you debaye...

NGC 7293 Helix Nebula in narrowband
The Helix (also known as "the Eye of Sauron") is the closest of the bright planetary nebulae to the solar system (about 700 light years distant), and covers an area of sky similar to that of the full moon (it actually spans about 2.5 light years of space). It represents ejecta from a dying star at t...

Re: Masking, I Really Need Help to Understand it
Just to clarify what Cheman said, in some instances (e.g. sharpen, decon etc.) only the part of the image covered by the mask (in green) will be modified. In others (e.g. wipe) the whole image will still be affected but only samples used to ascertain the 'background/gradient' will be drawn from the ...

Re: M20 Trifid Nebula - LHaRGB with synthetic Lum
For chrominance, I first opened each channel separately, did a 'blind' wipe (but used temporary autodev to check result), then denoised (blind again), then saved the still linear data. For luminance, I opened each channel (Lum, Ha, R, G, B) monochrome images separately, stretched/processed each unti...

M20 Trifid Nebula - LHaRGB with synthetic Lum
A fairly long integration of the reflection (blue) and emission (red) nebula of M20, the fabulous 'Trifid Nebula'. This is a large HII region in Sagittarius, located about 5,200 light years away. Full capture details and a high resolution version can be viewed here: http://www.astrobin.com/134243/ M...

Re: Hello everyone
Hi Marty, For file size, it depends on the megapixel count. The stacked file size should not be much bigger than any individual RAW, unless you've used Drizzle-based stacking. If the file is too large, it may be oversampled, in which case you can use Binning to reduce the size (and noise, if done wi...
