Thanks for uploading the data.
The data appears to be already stretched... Any idea what could have caused that?

No, don't think so. I'm going to give M42 another crack as soon as I get a clear night and make sure it's untouched.

Hey, could you maybe upload a single sub/RAW frame for me to look at? This way we can say for sure whether the data has been altered in between RAW and final stacked TIFF. It'd be good to know going forward!

Since we last spoke my laptop harddrive decided to call it a day and I lost everything except a few images I backed up. :( The Windows 7 registration details had been rubbed off the label so I've invested in W7 64bit and downloaded or installed all the latest software versions that I use.
Where were we? Oh yes!
Listed below are links to my latest offerings including CR2, DSS & ST TIFF files.
Also included are an example of M42 raw data as tiff file and DSS TIFF of same.
DSS seems to lose colour in stacking process.

Some files are very large so you might have to download to see them.

Thanks again for staying with me.
I shall put future offerings in new posts.

Oh man, that's terrible! :(
Hope you're up and running again and kept some backups of the really important stuff...

You'll love the switch to a 64-bit OS though for heavy programs like StarTools.

Something strange is going on - Your stacked M31 is way too bright/stretched to be linear, and when I stretch that M31 in StarTools I can see the signature of some sort of noise reduction (not totally sure, but it looks like it). The M31 CR2 RAW looks just fine though, so something goes wrong when you import the CR2s into DSS and stack them.

Last week was expensive but hey ho we survive and soldier on.
Still, my computer's never been so organised. Doubled the size of the harddrive, updated or upgraded all my software and all's working well so far.

I've just noticed that when saving a stacked file in DSS you are given a choice of applying adjustments or embedding them but not applying. Which should I choose? :?

Also on loading a raw file, DSS seems to have carried out some sort of stretching process leaving image darker and with reduced colour vibrancy. I'm using DSS version 3.3.3 beta 51. This, prior to any stacking with no adjustments by me. I used a single M42 image taken yesterday.

As a test and avoiding DSS for the moment I converted Raw to Tiff using Canon's own DPP, then processed with ST and here's the result:

The tracking was a bit off but good enough for this purpose.

Lastly, converted several images Raw to Tiff in DPP, stacked them in DSS and processed in ST.
