Field flattener vs lens module

Post by Rkonrad »

I'm thinking of upgrading a little - possibly purchasing a zenith star 61 or 73 from my very questionable 70-300mm zoom lens. I have been told that I would also need to invest in a field flattener. Trying to spend as little money as possible, I was wondering if I really need this as startools lens module does something like this anyway. What do people think? Can I get away without a field flattener?

Thanks Richard

Hi Richard,

Fixing issues during acquisition is always preferred. With a field flattener in place, your stacker will, for example, do a much better job aligning stars. Deconvolution will also benefit from the homogeneous stellar profile that a field flattener affords.
If you can spare the cash, definitely go for it!

Hope this helps,

Thanks Ivo

That makes sense. I hadn't thought about the registration issues during stacking.
