Still first try at processing

Post by Lawrence »

I wonder whether it is possible for me to post a pre-processed image from DSS and have anyone then do some basic processing with StarTools to show me what can be achieved? I have been working on a few images but have realised that I must be getting things wrong because the 'final' images look poor. My work flow has been: raw- autodev, keep; bin, keep; wipe+do+keep; autodev+redo global+keep.

I believe I am going by the recommended work flow but it repeatedly looks bad after most processes. As a 'standard' I did basic processing with Maxim DL and keep the result so that I can see how I'm doing.

FWIW I couldn't find any 'files folder' to post in. Pre-processed images are huge (DSS output) of about 71Mb.
Any suggestions most welcome (even 'go away and just learn it')

TIA

Hi Lawrence
a good way to get us the file to play with is to put in Dropbox or Google Drive, etc and post the link.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4ZtN- ... sp=sharing

The file is ~75Mb in size and is a bayered image that has been bias subtracted and comprises 4 images of comet Lovejoy. If anyone is willing to do something with it and post a jpeg with a list of processed steps, that would be brilliant. As explained, I have been using the suggested steps but I may not yet understand it all. Yes, I am aware of the image's short comings but it forms a basic image for me to learn ST.

TIA

Had a real quick try at this. Never tried a comet before, I had some trouble with the core and color as you can see. Maybe I shouldn't have capped green to yellow, not sure.
Anyway The thing that I had to do was bump up the Dark Anomaly filter in wipe. then I just used defaults in Color module, except for the cap green. Stop tracking/denoise using defaults the just a tad of repair and magic for fun. With more time, I might do better, and try other things to get the stars better, etc.

Nice job processing. Comets are one of the few objects in the universe that are actually green so definitely don't use the cap green command on them:-)

So thats why it was so green ;) Actually, it was waaaaaay to greeeeeennn, so I tried cap yellow, didnt like that, but didnt have time to go back and mess with it ;) Probably could have just reduced the green a bit but oh well

Actually, for only 4 light frames, and no flats, darks etc. not too bad. Pretty noisy, and lots of hot pixels. did you use the hot pixel removal in DSS? Some don't care for that method, but I find it works rather well with my setup.

Hello again
I am also learning to use DSS! That basic image was my first run with DSS! I have used Maxim DL for many years but I have never mastered it, particularly the guiding. Despite calibration it *always* grabbed a hot pixel and guided on that. I found a workaround but it was very tedious and so I finally made the decision to leave Maxim. I now use PHD for guiding. Then I had to sort out software for preprocessing and processing. I finally decided to try to master DSS. I have tried one or two processing packages (AAv5 and others) but now wish to master ST. So the answer to the DSS hot pixels question is 'no', I haven't done that yet. But the beauty here is that I have all the original master frames from a decade+ of imaging. Maybe I can learn how to rescue the data? The comet image was one of my most recent.
FWIW I have recently replaced the old observatory with a proper new one but have yet to re-install the camera/AO unit etc on the main scope, let alone the smaller scope outside under cover.

Many of my previous images comprise 40 minues + of data but I don't always do flats because the camera is permanently mounted (mostly). All the images can be better processed.

thanks again

Lawrence
