Re: ST 1.6 Autodev ? boxes not popping up help

HI Ivo, confirmed with 1.6.394RC on Win10 box, the pop-up ?helps are not working on AutoDev and ManDev, but they are on everything else I have come across (though not exhaustively).

Re: grain disp> 30, or fill in remaining dark patches? part1

I appreciate you taking the time to give me a detailed explanation! It makes more and more sense. Indeed the blobs are non-Gaussian. Even though they can't be "treated properly", I can't stop wondering if a grain size of 60 might mitigate some of it (hoping that from a programming point of view it's...

Re: Blotches patches mitigating high ISO noise

Woohoo! Bobby, thank you so much for suggesting Heal. On my latest attempt, in autodev I kept gamma closer to 1.0 (0.8 instead of 0.7) than previous. - in colour, I continued to push dark saturation back to 1.2 - In denoise1, I used grain size at 30.9, and this time scale 5 at 99%. - Heal: use the m...

Re: Blotches patches mitigating high ISO noise

Ah I see what you mean by correlated. I was thinking of it in the sense of one blob to another (in a pattern) or blobs on image 1 correlated to blobs on image 2. You are correct of course. In the upcoming night I will go for manual dithering. Just increase the gap between images to give me the time ...

Re: grain disp> 30, or fill in remaining dark patches? part1

Better data is the route to go. No argument there!
In terms of previously acquired data (e.g. comets in the field), I can't go back and retake it.
Wouldn't a grain dispersal of 60 help?
Thanks Ivo,
Alister.

Re: Blotches patches mitigating high ISO noise

Hi Ivo, Blotches and other correlated patterns should not occur in your datasets. Are you using flats and do you dither sufficiently between frames? Are you using the optimum ISO for your camera? These blotches are not correlated, only somewhat as they are similar in character and appear semi-period...

Re: grain disp> 30, or fill in remaining dark patches? part2

Interestingly, binning 50% also makes the dark blotches stand out more: no bin on left, 50% bin on right nobin_bin_comp.jpg That's not really a surprise since binning should increase the bright over the dark. Now here is why I ask for a grain dispersal than 30 pixels (perhaps a naive ask due to limi...

grain disp> 30, or fill in remaining dark patches? part1

I'm over my head in this deep end of noise suppression; all I can offer are some curious observations.I know I can somewhat mitigate high ISO noise grain by dropping the gamma down to say 0.7 and lowering the dark saturation.... the images shown here are at full saturation or even stretched to exagg...

Blotches patches mitigating high ISO noise

Please, if you know a better approach/workflow (than what is below) for minimizing blotches or patches, let us know. I've seen them on other forums and with Nikon, Canon 60Da, 5Diii, so it is a not-uncommon experience. Ivo, I will do a separate post in feature request about an idea with extra images...
