M81/M82
I think I'm done collecting M81 data for this year, time to move on. This stack is 11:45 of OSC plus 9:15 Ha (from the duoband, so quite inefficient vs proper mono). M81_OSC+Ha_v2.jpg Not yet totally ready to call it done in terms of processing (mostly because it is both cloudy and full moon), so no...

Re: M42, with issues...
Ah yes - green. It's always the green, isn't it? I have played with more drastic green throttling - and apparently I should, if you're seeing too much green cast to the blue stars. I was trying to leave a touch of green in the core, because (I think) there should be a bit of teal there. I'll return ...

M42, with issues...
Last year about this time I picked up my AT130EDT and 0.8x reducer and imaged M42. But I was plagued by a couple of light leaks - I think there's a thread in the "Trouble" forum. I hadn't used the reducer since, but put it back on to have another go at M42. Aaaand - the "light leak" was back, except...

Re: RC BlurXterminator …. Any comments ?
Mike in Rancho have you read Shaun's Experienced Imaging thread about his "convolve then deconvolve" experiment? There was discussion from Rista about noise profiles (I guess so, because you thought Shaun's new thread was about the M101 data). Anyway, I expect you're right that applying SVD to the ...

Re: Astro to Astro-art Continuum, 2024 Edition
I don't know, Jeff. I guess that's what we are here to discuss. :D Via the low/high pass filtering, and/or layer operations, however you want to look at it, "edges" are being detected and then hardened by having their transition zones narrowed. Can that be thought of as a correction? Well, it's an ...

Re: Astro to Astro-art Continuum, 2024 Edition
The only thing you need to know about GHS in the context of what I said is that there is a single stretch curve for the whole image. I suppose PI allows you to make masks and have different GHS stretch curves in different places. I've only used GHS in Siril, which has no mask abilities at all. The i...

Re: Astro to Astro-art Continuum, 2024 Edition
Thanks for pushing the conversation. The first step is that I'm not clear about is the word "local". Does local mean that HDR, for example, changes the stretch curve so that it is different at different coordinates within the image? That would be akin to a "masked stretch", right? Or, does local mea...

Re: Bayer drizzle
Somewhere I remember reading that, for CFA drizzle, one ought to dither every frame. (apparently I'm not the only one who recalls reading that https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/907844-m46m47-and-my-drizzlebxt-test/?p=13212611 ). But yeah, maybe that truism was not anticipating 15s subs. I have swit...

Re: Bayer drizzle
So here's an image that surely does not deserve to see the light of day - but it comes with a story related to my quest to someday properly use bayer drizzle. Last year I shot M42 at super-low gain, but it was when I had not yet sorted out the quirks of my AT130. So some subs were shot with the wide...

M 1 - Phase 1 - OSC
M1_OSC_430x90s_2.5sec_rgb_tight-crop_svd-1st_bin71.jpg 430x90s HCG (10hr 45m), AT130EDT, Risingcam IMX571c I collected more like 15 hours, but there was this nice stretch of quite good seeing so I culled it down to stack only the subs with better than 2.5" FWHM. I also tried ~7hrs of subs with <2.2...
