Re: StarTools 1.9 preview

Hi Derek, Thanks for the extra info and testing. I'm still not having any luck replicating the issue, and a thorough valgrind didn't turn up anything untoward either... :( What does the following command yield? swapon -s How much space is free on the drive where your /tmp/ folder is located? Thank y...

Re: StarTools 1.9 preview

I run into a hard crash using StarTools_1_9_552alpha - Linux64. The crash occurs in SVDecon mode of operation as soon as I press "Deap space (stars available)". The crash does not occur when using 551alpha so I hope it turns out to be something small. The StarTools logfile does not contain any info...

Re: Another M101 before/after supernova

Another great before-and-after of the SN!
Good to hear you got that light leak dealt with. If all that you got left are gradients, then you will be able to go much deeper, and you will get signal/detail you can trust. Processing will become much easier too.

Re: WIP, my first M101, featuring Holmberg IV

The SN is the cherry-on-top for your visit of M101. It's an area that's definitely worth revisiting if you ever end up going higher magnification and narrower fields.

Re: StarTools 1.9 preview

I just released a new alpha with more control over the de-ringing parameters (as well as a substantial improvement to processing speed when using intra-iteration resampling). I think you have all helped me realise that there are just too many ways datasets can be compromised that require more hands-...

Re: First time out

Further to the excellent advice here, one of the reasons why you would want to avoid live stacking (if you can), is that the live stacker can only use stats from whatever has been coming in. A post-acquisition stacker can gather stats on all frames that have come in, in its entirety, and make decisi...

Re: Supernova SN2023ixf in M 101 (UMa)

Yes, I was using SV Decon (Syntetic Iterations up to 12x, Syntetic PSF Radius up to 1.8 pixel). Definitely try giving SV Decon some samples, so that SV Decon can correct the shape of your stars (and detail) depending on the local (fancy word "spatially variant"/"SV") distortion. It was made for exa...

This is awesome! It has to be such a satisfying feeling to know even more of what you are producing is personally handcrafted, real optics, real detail, real everything. :bow-yellow:

Re: WIP, my first M101, featuring Holmberg IV

IMHO, as long as you disclose what you did, I think adding the supernova using a mask is absolutely acceptable (and, yes, lighten is probably the way to go ). From a documentary point of view, you are not "inventing detail" in the object as it is today, though you are "inventing detail" in...
