Re: Which filter to use?
I have no problem getting the colors I want from almost any filter thanks to StarTools, so color balance is not a concern for me. Light pollution is though.

Applying flat with layers module?
I don't suppose there is a way to apply a flat to an image inside StarTools with the layers module, is there?
TIA!
TIA!

Re: Which filter to use?
I guess one way to think about it, is that the Orion filter cuts 50% of LP and 38.5% of galaxy light, a ratio of 1.3:1, while the UHC cuts 85% of LP and 74.4% of galaxy, i.e. 1.14:1 ratio, which tells me that it would be a good idea to go with the Orion for the same exposure. But still it would be h...

Which filter to use?
Ok, this is not directly to do with using StarTools, but I am trying to figure out which filter (if any) to use for galaxies under my skies for the intention of giving StarTools the best data I can. Obviously there are no "galaxy filters" but I thought perhaps if a filter cuts more LP than galaxy, p...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
Do you have a LP filter between the reducer and the camera? I found I could not use my IDAS filter together with a reducer (Televue NP127is and Televue 0.8x reducer) due to reflections. The filter was the source of the reflections and the reducer is fine without it. ChrisH Yep, I did have a CLS fil...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
Hmm, I don't know. Here is the TIFF and RAW-processed of M31: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1c3jz2L9HfgNXRJTW5QZWJ6Qkk . On the one hand, the TIFF seems to have some easier to handle noise. On the other hand, when I try to get up to the faint edge of M31 and then make that edge more prominent e...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
Yes I did the same DCRAW command on all calibration frames, weird, huh? I'll do the process again. This time I'll use an M31 set, DSS 3.3.4 (I thought 3.3.6 gave a bit better result processing RAW, but perhaps it has bugs and that's why it was pulled, so I'll go back to 3.3.4) and I'll use your comm...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
Aaannnd, the correct TIFF-processed image with κ-σ is here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1c3jz2L9HfgR014OFkxX3E5SjQ . I also re-did the RAW and ticked the "Set black point to 0" in the RAW settings, which has given me trouble in the past, but here it seems to be probably a little beneficial: h...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
My bad, DSS does not work with TIFF off a network drive (one of those weird DSS glitches, it creates zero byte master calibration files), so I had to use another machine and I replicated all the settings... except the stack 100%, so it used a smaller sample. I am redoing it and will upload it, as we...
