Hi,
Can you try just stacking the 3 minute subs? It may be the 1 minute subs are degrading the image.
Can you also post one of the 3 minute subs as well? I'd like to see what has been captured.
Thanks,
Guy

Re: Stacking Programmes
Hi Richard,
With Regim I think you can include the bias frames in place of the flat darks (dark flats).
It seems to work for me. Let me know if you have problems.
I've also been using DSS a while so if you want to try and resolve that issue I'd be happy to help if I can.

Using Regim with StarTools
I was inspired by the post here to have a look at Regim by Andreas Rörig as an alternative to Deep Sky Stacker (DSS). I thought it might be useful to share the setup I am currently using - and would be interested in others' experience and advice. EDIT: Others have reported a problem with colours in ...

Re: Help with processing M33
Hi I'm no expert either but for what its worth I agree. In my (limited) experience: - Although ideally I avoid saturating pixels because it is lost data - in reality I often saturate some parts of the image. It is usually a compromise. Most often it doesn't cause a major problem - so work on capturi...

Re: Processing mono
Hi, I'm new to analysing images myself - so I may be wrong here - but I looked at the stacked TIF file and I noticed the following: i) A 4 second exposure is very short time for a sub-frame of a faint DSO - so it may be that you just aren't capturing enough light in each sub-frame to get a good sign...

Re: Image Evaluation Tips
I have updated the entry above with clarifications and added links to discussions and articles. To make this as complete as possible can anyone help me by suggesting any other: - useful image analysis techniques? - useful image processing techniques to resolve specific problems? (please include link...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
Hi Ivo, Thanks - thats cleared things up completely. :) To summarise (to make sure I've got this right - and for anyone following this): - To stop DSS white balancing: preprocess all sub-frames - Lights, Darks, Flats etc. - with dcraw using one of the command lines below. stack the resulting .tif (o...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
Hi Ivo, I've done some further analysis and prepared three different files to show the results I got with different approaches to using DSS. I did my tests on an old image taken with an unmodified DSLR. 1) using CR2 sub-frames - no preprocessing with dcraw The resulting file can be viewed or downloa...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
Thanks Ivo. OK, I think we are homing in on the area I'm confused about. :) I understand the whole reason for doing this is to avoid DSS doing any white balancing - so StarTools gets the best possible data to work with. I was thinking that if we used dcraw and set -r 1 1 1 1 then dcraw would, for ea...

Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS
Hi I've done sone tests and I think I have a better understanding of what dcraw is doing now. Please correct me if I'm wrong. DCRaw Action setting -S tells dcraw the value of the input image to consider saturated setting -k tells dcraw the value of the input image to consider black If you don't set ...
