Re: Eliminating white balancing when using DSS

Thanks for the explanation. I think these settings need to be changed for my setup. DSS seems to struggle to find stars and the result is a TIF which, when loaded into StarTools looks much fainter than the equivalent if using the CR2 files as input to DSS. I'll do some tests with changing the dcraw ...

Eliminating white balancing when using DSS

Hi Ivo In a number of conversations e.g. here here you talk about using DCRAW to preprocess the subs from Canon DSLRs and convert them to TIFFs before using DSS. Obviously the main reason to do this being to stop DSS white balancing the image so that we get the best stacked image for StarTools. As I...

Re: Image Evaluation Tips

Hi Ivo, Thanks for the really comprehensive response. I'm happy to do the compiling/editing of this list if you, and anyone else, will chip in with advice. I'm not sure how best to do this - but I'll start with this revised version below with a view to refining this entry as I get more feedback. For...

Re: Image Evaluation Tips

Hi Ivo, Thanks for the response. It certainly sounds like what I should always have in the back of our mind when processing the data. Such an understanding as you describe would also help in guiding how best to improve my technique and (over time) equipment. To some extent I have an (albeit imperfec...

Image Evaluation Tips

Hi Ivo. I was looking at that really helpful Astro Imaging Channel Startools video you did and at the end (at around 2h20m) someone asked about a methodical way of inspecting an image to see how good it is. Also, in the past you have said that the workflow depends on the data - and that many problem...

Re: DSS Settings for StarTools

Thanks for the explanation and kind words about the image. If the colours are good its thanks to StarTools (and the Canon !). I've enjoyed using StarTools. Even with my limited experience I can use its' powerful tools easily. I had read about the Scientific approach to handling colour and so I was t...

Re: DSS Settings for StarTools

Thanks for your responses. I was imaging the Rosette nebula using an unmodified Canon 1000D - getting 20 5-minute subs. I've stacked the Lights, Darks, Flats and Bias frames using the settings above and got the following image: https://app.box.com/s/x9xhneyv3417n4h8ib4yi58425trvtf3 I processed it us...

DSS Settings for StarTools

EDIT : Latest settings for DSS with screenshots can be found here . Hi, I'm new to Astrophotography and I am having a bit of trouble processing an image in Startools. I am doing the stacking in DSS and I know some settings affect StarTools' ability to process the image. As a first step I wanted to ...
