StarTools 1.9 Beta

Hi all, The first 1.9 beta is now available. If you've been following along with the 1.9 preview thread, there should not be too many new surprises. But if you haven't, then please have a look at the CHANGELOG file, which should list the many improvements. Again, many thanks to hixx decay and Carles...

Re: M 8 - Lagoon Nebula

I love the visual spectrum version here! The colors are spot-on IMO; the quintessential red/magenta is 100% expected from this H-II area, as it's a mixture of all emissions (not just pure red Ha). For example, there's Hb (blue at 1~/3rd intensity of Ha) and O-III in areas as well (teal), ...

Re: Journal paper on spatially variant deconvolution?

This link just popped up in the DSLR-DSO subforum of CN: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2212.02594v2.pdf Seems to be a science journal paper (which of course means it has a punny title) for a technique that will be employed on an upcoming NASA mission for a mini space telescope? I've just briefly skimmed th...

Re: Ngc6888 The Jellyfish Nebula

That's a respectable Jellyfish!

You will definitely want to start using deconvolution, particularly since 1.8 and 1.9 - there's a lot of (real) detail to bring out.

Do let me know how we can help.

Re: StarTools 1.9 preview

FYI, version 1.9.554.1 alpha will not open on my MacBook Pro with the M1 processor. I just tried on an MacBook Pro with M1 + latest macOS and was able to launch StarTools without issue... Please make sure to follow the unquarantining procedure (which was updated for macOS 13/Ventura). Do let me kno...

Re: StarTools 1.9 preview

Thank you all for all your help! :obscene-drinkingcheers: I tracked problem down to a text-string bug regression that happened between 551 and 552.
The latest version 554.1 should work (hopefully) reliably now.

Any further issues, do let me know!

Re: StarTools 1.9 preview

Thanks for your sleuthing guys! It is much appreciated.

I just released a new version with a couple of fixes that may (or may not) have caused instabilities.

@Dereksc, does this solve the issue for you?

Re: StarTools 1.9 preview

Hi Derek, Thanks for the extra info and testing. I'm still not having any luck replicating the issue, and a thorough valgrind didn't turn up anything untoward either... :( What does the following command yield? swapon -s How much space is free on the drive where your /tmp/ folder is located? Thank y...

Re: StarTools 1.9 preview

I run into a hard crash using StarTools_1_9_552alpha - Linux64. The crash occurs in SVDecon mode of operation as soon as I press "Deap space (stars available)". The crash does not occur when using 551alpha so I hope it turns out to be something small. The StarTools logfile does not contain any info...

Re: Another M101 before/after supernova

Another great before-and-after of the SN!
Good to hear you got that light leak dealt with. If all that you got left are gradients, then you will be able to go much deeper, and you will get signal/detail you can trust. Processing will become much easier too.
