ASTAP - Astrometric Stacking Program

Post by RICH-DSO »

Ivo, I read in your 1.7 manual about ASTAP and recently processed an image using it. Wow! what a difference compared to DSS.
No going back for me!
Thank you so much for improving our images...
Sincerely,
Richard

Hi Richard!

I'm testing ASTAP and get weird artifacts that I don't get with Siril nor DSS.

Do you use the settings as per the manual? I do too...but for me it doesn't work
very well, although it supposed to be quite good :(

Regards

Carles.

see my latest images stacked with ASTAP. I no longer use other stacking program...

with the image above,(in the write-up) I explain how I use ASTAP.

Let me know if you need anything else.

ASTAP is the way to go. make sure to align the channels by using blink...

Hi Rich!

Great images! And thank you for the tips! :D I will take them into account!

For me the problem is rather the artifacts it show, as Ivo mentioned those pixeles blotches might be
the dithered hot pixels, but I seem not to be able to get ride of them .

Will have to try to tweak values of the rejecting algorithm in kappa sigma clip or something.

Thank you for your help! :)

Leave the hot pixel in the dataset, Ivo would say, << it is best to deal with hot pixels within startools. Removing the hot pixels using DSS or stacking program will create artifacts...>> and then StarTools will not react very well to the processing done during stacking.

Ivo, any comments?

Good luck Carles

Not possible, it is too many of them. and they should have been rejected.

I've tried increasing the parameter "fix variable hot pixels" to 20 , but it doesn't remove them.
Siril does, DSS does too.
So for now will use these two... also, ASTAP in my pc is reaaaaaaaally slow... compared to the others

Untill I find out why.. I can't use it.

Thank you anyway, Richard :)

are your lights taken with a color or dslr camera. You must install DcRaw, right? Hopefully you have done that...

I capture with a OSC CCD astro camera that can output FIT/tiff straight from the camera. So I don't think I need DcRaw
But thanks anyway ^^

How do you debayer your file ? and integrate them in r g b channels ?

umm, with the recommended settings in any of software , being ASTAP DSS or siril.
Well, in siril I just input the bayer matrix of my sensor, but the first time I used it, Siril actually reads that information of the Fit header , so not even that needed.

I don't know if that answer your question ? Is not the same with DSLR where you have RAW files of any kind and usually needs to be converted to either FITS or TIFF.
And the debayer is usually bilinear interpolation with the input bayer matrix.

still, color is not the problem for me. the lack of rejecting the hot pixels is. And my darks work well in other software.
