Process with PI (stack and crop and initial stretch) and Startools. No earthly idea how to process star clusters. Had a heck of a time not over processing and still getting color. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Hi,

Any chance you could post your workflow (both PI and ST)?
Clusters should be pretty easy in StarTools (especially 1.3.5). Unfortunately PI (and other software) has a tendency to destroy colors in highlights (read more about that problem here, how 1.3.5 solves this, and to see an example of a star cluster rendered with 1.3.5's new color constancy model).

In StarTools, less is more, so you'd typically look at a very simplework flow for a cluster;
* Develop or AutoDev to inspect data.
* Remove artifacts.
* Remove gradients (Wipe).
* FInal stretch with Develop or AutoDev.
* Some HDR and/or Contrast optimisation (if you wish).
* Launch Color module.
* Switch Tracking Off / Noise Reduction.

oh I wish I could remember. I can't find it in PI and I was jumping all over the place

I tried a simpler approach with double cluster (didn't try and heal stars just working on color). Being color blind makes that part pretty daunting.

(Please bear with me - I'm battling a wrist injury at the moment, so replies may take a bit longer than usual)

Thanks for that! It's odd - I'd think there'd be more color we could bring out. Any chance you could share some data with me. I'll have a look as soon as my wrists allow me.

You might find the (MaxRGB view) useful in that case. It shows which channel is dominant for each pixel. It can help getting the color balance right without directly having to rely on actual color rendering.
E.g. if green pixels are dominant, ease off on the green. If red pixels are not dominant enough, add some red, etc.

Sure what data? I use a cls filter
Which causes me some issues I think

The M35 data would be great if you have a stacked FITS or TIFF file for me.

Hi,

I had a look at the data.
Your background appears to have some problems in that it contains anomalous data, blobs/areas... (incorrect flat frames or lack of bias/dark frames?)
Nevertheless, color recovery was pretty easy in 1.3.5. Just use the Color module as one of the last steps and you should be good!

Also have a look at the Lens module to ameliorate the field curvature in the data before you start processing.

This is what I came up with in 1.3.5. It's not great, but it shows (largely) correct color temperatures for the stars.

my attempt at dithering and did not use darks. Maybe I didn't do it correctly

I used flats and bias
