M16 Eagle Nebula

Post by akeru »

Hi all. Before a lot days of work finally I can enjoy my holidays in one of the most dark sky places in Spain, Teruel.
I took some pictures, one of them is this image of M16 (28x600" Canon EOS1000D and Newton 150/750)

This is a preliminary processing, and I would like know your opinions. I think that the nebula is fine but I'm not satisfied with the stars (white core in some of them) Do you have some tip for me? Thanks a lot

Hi,

Some great detail in that - you got the complex in in all its glory!
Could you post your work flow (StarTools.log) for us?
My only niggle with the image is that it appears the green channel has been reduced a tad too much - one would expect a good continuum of red, orange, yellow, white and blue stars, but the lack of a green component has removed orange and yellow.

Hi,

Looking at your wokflow, a few pointers;
Use the Color module as one of the last steps, not one of the first steps (see here why that is the case in StarTools).
Use the Wipe module as one of the first steps (after binning, cropping, etc.) to remove any color bias (which is not the same as color balancing!).
Use the Lens module as one of the first steps (after binning, before cropping) - since this necessarily crops the image, it may possibly be used in lieu of cropping away stacking artifacts.
Do as many operations as possible before switching Tracking off (e.g. Color and Contrast). Noise reduction and color reproduction will be better.

Hope this helps!
