Orion Starshoot G4 OSC - Bayer Pattern heads up

Post by ionia23 »

Hello,

More on this later, but the debayering pattern people use if they want to debayer the raw FIT files this camera captures via the Orion Camera Studio may not be correct. This information might save a few headaches.

DeepSkyStacker can't debayer these properly at all, no matter which of the camera options you choose. Likewise for FitsWork if you follow the documented debayer pattern for the camera. Also, unlike pretty much every other camera in existence, it doesn't follow a variant of RGB. This is CMYK, though K is actually Green (G)

The documentation for the sensor states this is the pattern.
C Y C Y
G M G M
C Y C Y
M G M G

It has a Y offset of 1. That's part of the problem. You can't put custom debayer patterns into DeepSkyStacker, but you can into FitsWork.

Set your debayering pattern in FitsWork or whatever to:
M G M G
C Y C Y
G M G M
C Y C Y

You're stilll going to have some ugly color problems but this will (mostly) eliminate those wierd horizontal lines when an image isn't debayered correctly.

This camera is 852x582 (though I think that's 752 X 582) with 8.6 x 8.3 microns per pixel. That puts it just about on target to use with a 105mm refractor or a 203mm reflector without under/oversampling.
